The most common side effects from stimulation include voice alteration/hoarseness, increased coughing, sore throat, prickling or tingling of the skin, and shortness of breath.

Infection is the most common complication of the procedure.

Epilepsy (EU CE Mark) — The VNS Therapy System is indicated for use as an adjunctive therapy in reducing the frequency of seizures in patients whose epileptic disorder is dominated by partial seizures (with or without secondary generalization) or generalized seizures that are refractory to seizure medications.
Epilepsy (US) — The VNS Therapy System is indicated for use as an adjunctive therapy in reducing the frequency of seizures in patients 4 years of age and older with partial onset seizures that are refractory to antiepileptic medications.

Not approved in all geographies. Indications for use vary by region.
